it might be interesting to let this evolve as a thread on this forum...

as people read this thread and add their comments we could have a pretty good idea of what the la permaculture guild is about.

reasons for being here:
to care for the earth
to care for other people
to quietly gather experience and after a while we start to share what we have learned.

how do we make that happen:
1. we work and get dirty and WE MAKE THINGS HAPPEN!!!

2. we share with ourselves and the larger community
by giving workshops (if we have the knowledge)
or by hosting workshops (if we don't have the knowledge within the guild)

other questions we need to answer,

what constitutes a worthy project?

where are the other members of our tribe (the ones who don't know about us or we about them)most likely to be?
farmers' markets, whole foods, coops, book stores like the bodhi tree, etc.

how do we best find them? flyers, pamphlets, tables at the farmers' market, etc.

what are our priorities?
growing our membership, work projects, having parties, political shenanigans, etc.

    Good work Tom!
Why am I here? Because I believe that the paradigm of permaculture is an incredibly way to help sustain life on this planet in a harmonius abundant way in perpetuity. I see our city having so many resources that waste into trash and so many (myself included) filling imaginary needs with more and more useless crap! I'm here to learn how to gracefully simplify and be inspired by the likes of you to live right.
I am in complete agreement of your rough agenda. I think working together on projects is the best way to start building guild experience and connections;'////////////////////////[//////////// (my cat just walked across the computer) he's trying to rub his head on my hands as I type so this is getting difficult.
I'm also here to learn as much as I can about practical solutions to solving needs.
I really want solid experience with how to set up a small gray water system (basic plumbing?), how to design a landscape on paper and install it (I can play with plants but I want to know stuff about irrigation and water harvesting because without that you're doomed).
If I could articulate again I'm here to learn practical satisfying skills then to teach those skills to others.
What about the rest of you?
    Joan
P.S. as far as worthy projects I think we should discuss the impact and the resources required. My yard is great for playing around 8aonud

    oops.
around and working together (building community) but doesn't have much impact on the greater LA (I'd be happy to host more parties though!), Seed Lady is a great project for a lot of reasons - we can come and go and she will make sure it continues, it is high profile and has an incredibly rewarding social service aspect and best of all she wants us!

      Hi Tom,

The fact that people like me could find my way to you within a few days of arriving in LA is one good sign - just by having a presence on the Net and using this kind of contact as a means of communication, you fulfill part of your function in connecting people of like interests who can then actually get together and do some practical things (like turning Mama Botanica's compost and feeding her artichokes!)

      ciao

Because the blue prints for the health of our worlds future has not been written. Our government makes us believe consumerism will cure everything. So we as small as we are must break through to the regular people by example and by being excited. We have skills, ideas, energy from this new lease on life. It's possible to live healthy and happy, just follow the patterns of nature.

    solution: permaculture,permaculture,permaculture

Why are we forming a permaculture guild in LA?

Building hope. Becoming aware of other people in the area who are thinking about and manifesting positive and life-enriching ways to live, networking. The LA Permaculture Guild is a forum for bringing the LA area together. For me, unearthing and making connections with groups doing work to bring heart, soul, ecological thinking and fun to the LA area will help me find a way to grasp and humanize the vast and disconnected sprawl. I want to feel at home here. LA has an overwhelming superficiality hanging heavily in the air. I think that it needs help, support and lots of hands-on work to become a more livable place. Who's gonna do this work but ourselves? Each one of us. There's a lot of work to do and lot of love to share.

Invigorating and sustaining the energy that is created when communities come together to participate in building and living in rhythm with nature.

Offering and promoting gatherings to open peoples minds to permaculture and other forms of ecological design and thinking.

To have fun, get to know each other, work together, learn from each other, play in the earth, build and grow...

I am here in hopes to create the "Hundredth Monkey Effect". It IS the year of the Monkey, after all. It is time to see permaculture and sustainablility as a standard MOU.

Raising awareness and networking with interested like-minded souls is the best way to support each other and keep building momentum. I read somewhere that moving circles create an abuncance of energy so strong that it can actually cause physical disruptions! So, if we keep our circle moving and growing, perhaps we can disrupt the cycle of dis-intergration and manifest the growing cycle of harmony and comm-unity partcipation.

    Permaculture leads to...

    Integrity of creation
    Themes Emerging
    Religion, Ecology, Environment
    Practice simple living
    Be true to yourself
    Honor Rituals
    That Honor Earth
    Stay connected to others
    Find unity in community
    Chose for today
    Be conclusive
    Whether or not conservative
    POSSESS
    Do not BE Possessed
Break the chains that Bind our Hands
    Pledge to be good stewards
    And mindful of life
    Hook up to Higher Intelligence
    IT’S THAT SIMPLE
    Day by day
    a matter of (re)programming
