Greetings LA Permaculture family,

Fruit Tree tour will be in the LA area from February 22 to March 10th of 2006. We are seeking creative collaborations, school contacts, urban teepee village camping contacts, and to give a general heads up that we are coming and it is going to be big. Below is more information. This spring Common Vision will run its third annual Fruit tree tour, a 20-city, 70-day tour planting over 1000 fruit trees at urban schools from San Diego to Sacramento. Traveling in veggie oil-powered caravan, 25-earth educator of Common Vision will teach students about sustainable ecology through a daylong program that includes West African agricultural drumming and earth-conscious hip-hop. The goal of this annual tour is to develop working relationships with teachers and administrators to integrate sustainability into the schools’ curricula and landscapes.

The Program

*** Common Vision arrives at each school with a crew of twenty-five farmers, earth educators, and performance artists and twenty plum, apple, peach, pear, persimmon, and apricot trees aboard a pair of vegetable oil powered buses.

*** The program begins with a performance of West African drumming and dance traditionally used for agriculture. We use stories, performance, and folklore from indigenous cultures to introduce key ecological and sustainable design concepts.

*** Students work in small rotating groups that plant trees as other students play simple agricultural drum rhythms. The integration of music and community earthwork provides an empowering and memorable experience.

*** Common Vision provides fruit trees and eco-centric curriculum follow-up suggestions that help students and faculty to care for the trees and to understand the implications of localized food systems for the environment and for local and global communities.
